Story

I was a normal kid. My family came from Malaysia and I was born in Singapore on the 16th of June 1999. Growing up as a Singapore PR definitely wasn’t easy, as I had to pay for many more things as compared to a Singaporean. From young, I remember that trips to attractions such as the Zoo and Underwater World was a luxury as I had to fork out cash. I slowly caught on that my family was not doing well financially.

The importance of savings had been instilled in me since young. I learnt to save before spending. I started working in Secondary School during the school holidays, so that I can earn pocket money and not have to ask for allowance from my parents. As I interacted with more friends in school, I realised that most of my friends did not need to worry about money issues at the same age. To be honest, it made me feel inferior and envious.

Why do I need to worry about money when I should be enjoying my youth?

What must I do to get out of this situation?

Something definitely needed to be changed.

In poly, I was in Ultimate Frisbee. Trainings were on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I have never joined the trainings on Saturdays as I would be working during the weekends. It resulted in the lack of time spent with my teammates, as well as slow improvement in the sport. I worked for the entirety of my poly days, just to have a negligible amount in my bank account. I regretted, but I did not have any other choice.

2 years in the Army flew past with the global pandemic. I needed to change something in my life. An opportunity arose, and I decided to take it. I joined as a Financial Services Consultant under Odyssey Advisory. I have since learnt the importance of proper financial planning, coupled with proper guidance.

The journey of financial planning is definitely not easy, but fruitful. It is not uncommon for many young adults to disregard this conversation. I too, was a part of the majority who lacks awareness. As I start talking to more people regarding this topic, I thought to myself.

What do I want to achieve in this career?

So, this is my mission: To educate and help as many as possible to escape from the situation I was once in. “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” – Barack Obama

I am slowly transforming myself into a unique young professional, changing one life at a time.
