Story

Many who have crossed paths with me in the recent years would say that I am highly capable, independent and career-oriented female. While I love that my community now associate me with competence and self-sustenance, I wasn’t always like this.

I got to where I am today through numerous life’s adversities.

Don’t get me wrong- growing up, I’ve never had to worry about food and shelter, and I also fared pretty well throughout my academic years, which I will always be grateful for.

Was life always smooth sailing for me? Hardly! I will always recall going though familial issues at 17, while my peers were focusing on A levels, I had to deal with late night drama, but I made it through. After graduating from Victoria Junior College, the next “normal” step would be to pursue a degree, but I struggled to align passion and career prospects- so I started working. Naturally, my parents disagreed, but I am a real stubborn one. From tough hours as a pastry chef (surprise!), to being a manager at 23 in a SME; I discovered that I had the ability to thrive at whatever environment I was put in, but there was something missing.

I woke up every day knowing what I had to accomplish and went to bed every night to repeat the routine. I was doing what I had to survive, and at the back of my mind, I’d always have the nagging feeling that I needed to do more, to justify to my parents that I could excel and live, instead of just floating by in life.
It wasn’t until I came across the opportunity to join the financial advisory industry that I found a place to make a change. It was the first time I connected love with career. Ask anyone, and they’d testify that I love what I do. To be able to lead people to a path of independence and self-sufficiency, to educate and change traditional mindsets towards insurance, to gain the massive trust that my clients have in me, and to inculcate better financial decisions in them. Truly, nothing can ever replace that.

Through my career, I’ve forged friendships in people I would otherwise have never gotten to know, and had the honour of being their confidant, or even regarded as a sister or daughter to some.

Something even closer to heart is my mother writing me a note acknowledging that she was incredibly proud when she witnessed me running my appointments over zoom and hearing her speak of my love for my job to her friends over the phone.

I’m sure most of you can all relate to how tough it is to gain a stamp of approval from our Asian parents, and along with the radical shift from objecting to actively supporting my choices, it’s a real testament of
what I’m doing right.

But as an advisor, she was really articulate in her pitch and she made the whole process really comfortable and bubbly, like her personality.
