My journey as a Financial Services Consultant has seen its fair share of life-changing moments!

But before I get into that, I would say it was a little unimaginable that I would step into this career considering my own family’s experience with our then insurance agent.

Let me share.

A few years ago, my dearest father was diagnosed with 3rd stage cancer, and it was a troubling time for my family. Due to unethical means and poor planning by our family insurance agent, we realised my dad was uninsured despite being made to believe so. Our family was already in shock at the news of the illness and the lack of insurance felt like another cheap blow.

$78,000?? How were we going to afford this treatment? Furthermore, the doctor said that there was only a 50% chance of success. My mother and I were relentless on him receiving the treatment, nonetheless. 50% chance was better than no chance.

However, my father felt otherwise. He could not bear to have the family savings wiped out for his illness and still face a 50% chance of failure. I remembered I kneeled and begged him to fight for me. The three of us cried so much. My mother was under heavy stress at her workplace too as she had to take a long-term leave to take care of my father. This did not sit well with her boss and job security.

From that day, I made a vow to raise the awareness of the importance of risk management in the family. As cliché as it may seem, but I’d like to help prevent people from suffering the same circumstances that my family had to go through.

After some years in the career, I realized how amazing this career could be. I have been able to make a difference in peoples’ lives and do what my family agent was unable to. Once, a client of mine who was distraught at the news of his own illness, finally saw a glimmer of hope when the insurance claim was paid out to him. He finally had the peace to proceed with his treatment without fear of financial worries.

Odyssey has been a major catalyst in creating an environment where I am best able to grow and develop myself as a well-rounded consultant for my clients. I’m excited to create more wins for the journey ahead.
