Constance Tan Shian Cher

Financial Services Consultant

Story

Having always strived to find meaning in whatever I do, career was definitely not an exception.

Being through a normal Singapore education, we are always told which subjects leads to a ‘successful’ future and hence, to only strive for that. While I did come from a JC, I have always struggled to adhere to that mindset and ultimately come to the realisation that my passion lies away from the sciences and math but towards simply caring for and understanding the lives of others.

Despite the critiques of my ‘dull future’ from the older generations, I pursued a degree in psychology which I thought was a good foundation to have for any jobs in the future.

So how did I end up here as a Financial Services Consultant? It definitely wasn’t an idea I fathomed either.

Well, one reason could possibly be from my family financial background. I grew up in a family that wasn’t the most well to do nor complete. I was always helplessly hearing the financial struggles of my mother and the shouts and screams between my parents. The anxiety I developed from the situation at home had me stressing over my finances at a young age, attempting part time jobs from when I was 15 and saving any cent I could ‘to help my mother’.

Overtime, I did realise how critically hard I was on myself and how unsustainable it is.  What I could do instead was to look forward and tackle the root cause of the situation and the solution to that, was to learn for myself the right ways of financial planning.

By a chance encounter, I hopped onto a conversation about the job of an FA, something so foreign in my scope of studies yet widely stigmatised by all. With an open-mind, I was truly surprised at how much this career aligned to my desires – to understand and care for the lives of others and not only that, to be able to find solutions for these people who placed their trust in me.

For a long-term career decision at 21 it required great deliberation indeed. Ultimately, here’s the present me, taking that leap of faith to embark on this journey in full force!

Trust is the foundation on which buildings of all genuine relationships are built on and that along with consistency is what I see in myself as a Financial Services Consultant. We are all in life together so pop in if when you need a chat on finances and/or life and I will for sure be ready to walk it through with you!
